There’s been a big rise in talk around Passivhaus homes lately — which is great, in theory. But did you know that there’s actually passivhaus registration?
The problem? The term gets thrown around a bit too loosely. And a lot of people don’t realise that not every house called a Passivhaus has actually gone through certification and needs passivhaus registration.
There’s no restriction stopping a builder from using the term. But unless the home has been properly designed, modelled in Passive House Planning Package(PHPP), and tested against the standard, it’s not a Certified Passivhaus.
It’s a bit like calling a backyard veggie patch “organic” because you didn’t spray it this week. You might be on the right track, but it’s not the same thing.
So if you’re considering building to that level, just ask:
-
Has the home been modelled in PHPP?
-
Will it be blower door tested?
-
Who’s signing off the certification?
At Enduro, we’ve built Certified Passivhaus homes, and we’re upfront about whether that’s what’s being delivered — or if we’re just borrowing principles for a lower-spec outcome.
Because if you’re going to build to this standard, it’s worth making sure you’re actually getting it.
