What is slab insulation, and does every home need it? Slab insulation doesn’t come up much in most builds, and it’s not something we push for every home. But in the right situations, it can make a noticeable difference to comfort and performance.
If you’re doing underfloor heating, for example, slab edge insulation is required by code. And if you’re aiming for a Certified Passivhaus, insulation under and around the slab isn’t optional, it’s a key part of how the whole system works.
Even outside of those scenarios, it can be worth considering if:
You want better winter performance
You’re working on a high-performing design
You’re building on a site that’s exposed or has specific thermal concerns
It’s one of those quiet details that doesn’t cost a fortune but can make a home feel more consistent and comfortable, especially on cold mornings.
At Enduro, we talk through slab insulation as part of the overall design conversation. We don’t include it by default, but we don’t ignore it either. If it makes sense for your home, we’ll show you why, and if it doesn’t, we’ll explain that too.
Once you understand what is slab insulation and where it adds value, it becomes much easier to decide whether it belongs in your build.
