I Believe Airtightness Is the Most Underrated Principle in Homebuilding

By

When we talk to people about building performance, airtightness usually isn’t the first thing they bring up. But in my view, it should be.

Because airtightness is one of the biggest factors in how comfortable, quiet, and efficient a home is — and most people don’t realise that.

Without airtightness, all that expensive insulation and glazing leaks value straight out of your home. You lose heat in winter, gain heat in summer, and waste energy trying to balance it out.

It’s a bit like buying a premium fridge and leaving the door slightly open — it still runs, but it’s doing a lot more work than it should.

And here’s the kicker: a house that leaks air often feels uncomfortable even when the thermostat says otherwise. It’s hard to explain until you’ve lived in a house that doesn’t leak — but once you have, you’ll notice the difference immediately.

That’s why we blower door test our homes. We don’t guess. We check.

Airtightness doesn’t get the attention it deserves — but it’s one of the most valuable things we do.
